Sustainability in water treatment projects

Benchmarking and improving the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment plants

As an engineering company for the water sector, the design and renovation of public wastewater treatment plants are among Iv-Water’s main activities. Special attention is paid to CO2 emission. In the context of Iv-Group’s CO2-performance ladder certification, Iv-Water has developed tools to estimate the CO2 released during operation of wastewater treatment plants. This allows us to compare alternatives during the design phase, and help customers choose for sustainable solutions. The presentation features the tools for assessing the carbon footprints of wastewater treatment plants. It also explains the role of Iv in improving them.

Saline agriculture in Egypt

Growing crops using brackish water sources.

A Dutch company, Salt Farm Texel, has done extensive research on the use of brackish water for agriculture. During 10 years of research, it selected crops and developed irrigation methods to allow food production in areas affected by salinization of soil. Iv-Water is involved in the introduction of this type of agriculture in Egypt. Although specially selected crops give high yield in saline soils, they do not take away the cause of salinization. Hence, care must be taken to ensure that the use brackish water in agriculture not make matters worse on long term. Iv-Water has developed a method to quantify the effects of saline agriculture, and proposed options for water reuse to achieve sustainable, steady-state conditions. The combinations of salt tolerant crops and water treatment methods are now scheduled for real scale testing in Egypt and are explained further in this presentation.
